Sven Békési paints with an inventor’s curiosity and a composer’s sense of structure. His restless line recalls Picasso and Beckmann; his approach to composition has an affinity with Richard Strauss: figures, gestures and fragments become motifs, transformed through repetition and contrast into a larger whole. Beyond this semantic level, Békési examines the syntax of matter, the connection between standpoint, viewer and work, and carries it onto a semiotic level with a light, almost accidental brushstroke. Art, for him, is to catch and create experiences anyone intuitively understands.

Art is there to shine. We are the light of the world. We can shape light to guide people, and for a brief moment we can use art to look into the future. I love looking for patterns in nature and society, and composing those impressions until a work catches the spark.
